In a world brimming with technology, progress, and proclamations of shared humanity, the streets of Gaza today reflect a haunting contradiction. The UN human rights chief’s words—”horrifying, unconscionable suffering”—are not mere diplomatic outbursts but cries from the edge of human despair. The scorched lives of Palestinian civilians, many of them children, women, and the elderly, bear testimony to a conflict that no longer distinguishes between combat and innocence. In the dance between firepower and vengeance, humanity itself seems to be the collateral damage.
War, in all its forms, begins with a failure of empathy. It is perpetuated by the silence of those who know better and the stubbornness of those who hold power. The Gaza conflict, compounded by the scars of history and the politics of the moment, has turned into a theatre where grief is routine and compassion is rationed. Calls for restraint from leaders, when not backed by action, remain as empty as bombed-out schools and shattered hospitals. And yet, amid the rubble, voices of survival whisper the oldest truth: all people want is to live in peace, with dignity.
When conscience retreats behind borders and the world watches with weary eyes, suffering becomes normalized. But suffering is not statistics—it is the slow death of hope. It is the silence after a child’s last cry, the fear etched into the face of a mother, the darkness that descends when humanity forgets its own. As the Human Rights Council meets again, one must ask—not just what world leaders will do—but what each of us is willing to remember: that the measure of a civilisation lies not in its power, but in how it treats its most wounded.
