Tamil Nadu is currently experiencing intensified rainfall as the northeast monsoon becomes more active.
The state witnessed heavy rains across 18 districts yesterday, signaling a continuation of wet weather conditions.
This rainfall surge is linked to the formation of a new low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal, as reported by the regional meteorological department.The meteorological center’s bulletin highlights that this low pressure area developed in the Bay of Bengal near the Kumari Sea, adjacent to the southwest region of Sri Lanka.
Authorities indicated that this system is expected to strengthen further within the next 24 hours, potentially leading to increased rainfall and possible weather disturbances across the coastal and interior districts.
Residents and officials in Tamil Nadu are advised to remain alert for updates as this weather development could impact day-to-day activities and may necessitate precautionary measures, especially in the districts already seeing heavy rainfalls. The situation underscores the active nature of the northeast monsoon season in the region this year.

IMD Director Amudha stated that the northeast monsoon has been active with rainfall at five percent above normal in the last 24 hours.
In view of these developments, the meteorological department has issued an orange alert for Chennai on November 29, indicating the possibility of very heavy rainfall.
The alert also extends to seven other districts—Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore—and a very heavy rain orange alert has been declared for Thiruvallur district on November 30. Nellai (Tirunelveli) and Tenkasi districts are also under an orange alert for heavy rainfall today.
