Raj Bhavan rename: CM Stalin says change in mindset needed, not name

The Union Home Ministry has issued an directive to rename all “Raj Bhavans” across India as “Lok Bhavan” — and Raj Niwas residences to “Lok Niwas”. And  this move has sparked political debate.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin issued a sharp rebuke of the renaming exercise. In a post on X, he asked whether simply rechristening the Governor’s residence would amount to real respect for democratic institutions — or whether it was merely a superficial gesture.
“Changing the name is less important than changing the mindset!” he wrote, adding that the real respect belongs to governments elected by the people and to the sovereign Legislative Assembly — the true “People’s House.”
Stalin labelled the renaming as potentially symbolic “eyewash,” questioning the sincerity behind renaming when the fundamental attitude toward elected institutions remains unchanged.
He argued that if there is no corresponding change in thought and action — namely, genuine respect for democratic mandates and the assembly — then changing the name of a building is pointless.
