The national railways will now release the reservation chart 8 hours before a train’s departure instead of the existing 4‑hour window, a change announced recently by the Indian Railways and reported in regional news outlets.Under the revised schedule, for trains departing before 2:00 PM, the chart will be finalised by 9:00 PM the previous night. For trains leaving later in the day, the chart will be generated 8 hours ahead of departure.
The decision — taken at the directive of Ashwini Vaishnaw — aims to reduce uncertainty for passengers, especially those holding waitlisted tickets. With earlier charting, travellers will get their seat confirmation much earlier, giving them time to make alternative arrangements if their ticket remains unconfirmed.
The new process will be rolled out in phases across all zones to avoid disruption. Once fully implemented, this change is expected to benefit long‑distance travellers, people from suburbs and remote areas, and those booking tickets on waitlist — who often face last‑minute anxiety.
