Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin has written a detailed letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the Indian government to take strong diplomatic action to protect the rights and interests of Sri Lankan Tamils amid proposed constitutional reforms in Sri Lanka.In his letter, Stalin warned that the constitutional changes currently under consideration in Sri Lanka could further marginalise the Tamil community by reinforcing a unitary state system instead of granting meaningful power devolution and political autonomy. He stressed that past constitutional frameworks have historically denied basic rights to Tamils and perpetuated structural discrimination, fueling long-standing grievances.
Stalin highlighted the deep historical, cultural, and emotional ties between Tamil Nadu and the Sri Lankan Tamil population, noting that the plight of Tamils across the Palk Strait resonates strongly with people in his state. He called on the Indian government to engage at the highest diplomatic level with Sri Lankan authorities to ensure protections for minority rights are enshrined in any new constitutional arrangement.
The chief minister also reiterated the need for a constitutional process that includes devolution of powers, minority safeguards, and pluralistic federal structures to guarantee equality and security for Sri Lankan Tamils. Stalin expressed confidence that proactive Indian involvement would contribute to a just and lasting solution that upholds regional peace and justice.
