The Koyambedu Vegetable Market in Chennai will remain closed on Saturday, January 17, in view of the Pongal festival, according to an official announcement by traders’ associations.
G.T. Rajasekar, President of the Koyambedu All Traders Associations Federation, said the decision was taken as farm workers, traders and market employees would be travelling to their native places to celebrate Pongal, making it impractical to operate the vegetable market on the festive day.
However, he clarified that the Koyambedu fruit market and flower market will function as usual, ensuring the continued supply of fruits and flowers to the public.
Traders have advised consumers to plan their vegetable purchases in advance to avoid inconvenience due to the one-day closure of the vegetable market.
