Farmers in Tiruchirappalli district staged a protest on Sunday demanding the release of water from the historic Kallanai (Grand Anicut) Dam to irrigate parched agricultural lands.
The demonstration took place on a major route near Musiri, where farmers blocked traffic to highlight the urgent need for water and press authorities to act swiftly.
The farmers, representing several villages dependent on Kaveri river irrigation, said that delayed water release from the dam has adversely affected crop growth, especially for sugarcane, paddy, and other key seasonal crops.
Many farmers said that without adequate water, sowing and cultivation cycles are disrupted, leading to economic hardship and uncertainty. They urged the government to ensure timely water distribution to downstream canals and reservoirs to support farming activities.
Protest leaders argued that water scarcity in the region has reached a critical level due to insufficient inflows and delays in opening the dam’s shutters.
They called on the Water Resources Department and state authorities to release sufficient water to meet agricultural requirements and prevent crop loss. The farmers also appealed to political representatives to intervene and find a sustainable solution for equitable distribution of Kaveri waters.
Traffic was temporarily disrupted on the main road during the protest, but police personnel maintained a peaceful environment, allowing dialogue between protesters and officials. The farmers warned of escalating protests and extended agitation if their demands are not addressed promptly.
Agricultural experts have noted that water management in the Kaveri delta region continues to be a sensitive issue, especially during dry spells, and requires coordinated action among irrigation authorities.
