A student from Maharashtra tragically drowned off the coast of Chennai on Sunday, while another youth remains missing after both got into trouble in the sea. The incident occurred near Marina Beach, where a group of students had gone to relax. According to eyewitnesses, the two students entered the water and were soon swept by strong currents. Bystanders raised an alarm, and locals along with lifeguards rushed to rescue them. Officials and rescuers managed to recover one of the students, but he was later pronounced dead. The body has been taken for post-mortem examination. The search for the second student is ongoing, with coast guard teams and local authorities continuing efforts to locate him.
Police said the group had stopped by the beach after visiting other parts of Chennai and had not anticipated the dangerous sea conditions. “The waves and undercurrents were strong,” a police official noted, urging people to exercise caution while entering the sea, especially at crowded urban beaches. The tragedy has underscored concerns over public safety at coastal spots, particularly during high tide and rough sea conditions, with authorities reminding visitors to remain within designated safe zones and heed warnings from lifeguards.
