Mumbai, Mar 20: Vaishnavi Adkar is emerging as one of the most promising faces in Indian tennis, and her rapid progress is beginning to highlight a new, more structured pathway for players aiming to break into the professional circuit.
Backed by Rohan Bopanna and guided by coach M. Balachandran, Adkar has shown consistent improvement on the international stage. She recently reached the final of a $100,000 ITF event in Bengaluru and followed it up with a title-winning performance at a $30,000 tournament in Kalaburagi.
Her rise has been steady and measurable. From being ranked outside the top 700, she has now moved closer to the top 400, with her immediate goal being a push into the top 300 — a step that would open doors to higher-level tournaments, including Grand Slam qualifiers.
The key difference in her development has been the structured support system provided through the Rohan Bopanna Tennis Academy. Unlike traditional approaches that focus mainly on funding, this model ensures access to a travelling coach, physiotherapy support, and a stable training base. This consistency has allowed Adkar to focus entirely on performance and improvement.
Technically, her game has also evolved. Known earlier for aggressive shot-making, she has worked on improving her movement, defensive play, and shot selection — areas that are crucial for success at the international level. The emphasis on movement and match awareness reflects a shift in training philosophy.
The initiative, supported by the Motilal Oswal Foundation, is currently assisting a select group of players, including Prarthana Thombare, with plans to expand in the future.
While Adkar’s journey is still in its early stages, her performances offer a positive sign for Indian tennis. More importantly, they underline the importance of a structured system in helping players transition successfully from the national circuit to the global stage.
