Chennai, Apr 6:
A growing shortage of commercial LPG cylinders in Tamil Nadu has led to a sharp increase in food prices, impacting both small eateries and daily consumers across the State.
Hotels and roadside vendors, struggling with limited gas supply, have been forced to hike prices. Idli prices have risen from ₹10 to ₹15–₹20, while dosa prices have nearly doubled to around ₹30. Variety rice meals now cost ₹60–₹70, up from ₹40, and beverages like tea and coffee, along with snacks, have already seen hikes of up to 50%.
The crisis is attributed to a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, supply chain disruptions, and rising demand, leaving small businesses with limited access to fuel.
As a result, many eateries have reduced menu items and operating hours, with some even facing temporary shutdowns. The surge in food prices has increased the daily financial burden on the public, prompting calls for immediate government intervention to stabilise LPG supply and control costs.
