Chennai, Aug 24:
The Tamil Nadu government will drop the proposed Parandur greenfield airport project and identify an alternative location for the state’s second airport, Chief Minister Vijay announced in the Assembly on Monday.
Making the announcement under Rule 110, Vijay said the government would soon select a suitable alternative site for the proposed airport. The decision comes as Tamil Nadu seeks to expand its aviation infrastructure to meet the growing demand for air travel.
The Chief Minister also announced the expansion of the women’s free bus travel scheme, aimed at extending affordable public transport benefits to more women across the State.
In another announcement, Vijay said the Vetri Payanam scheme would be expanded from October 2, enabling more people to benefit from the programme.
The three announcements — dropping the Parandur airport proposal, expanding free bus travel for women and extending the Vetri Payanam scheme — were made by the Chief Minister under Rule 110 of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
