Getting to and from Metro stations in Chennai could soon become easier, with the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority and Chennai Metro Rail Limited planning to roll out 220 electric low-floor buses to improve first- and last-mile connectivity. The service is expected to begin by December 2026.
To align routes with commuter needs, a city-wide survey is being conducted through the Chennai One app. Users are asked about their starting points, Metro stations used, travel modes, and last-mile challenges, along with any specific requirements such as accessibility support.
The proposed fleet will include 70 larger 7-metre buses and 150 smaller 5-metre buses, all electric and air-conditioned. These buses will primarily cover areas within a 5 km radius of Metro stations, especially neighbourhoods with limited public transport access.
Around 20 buses per station may be deployed based on demand.
The buses will be operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation, with flexible routes in the initial phase. Officials said routes will be fine-tuned based on commuter usage before being finalised.
Authorities have urged residents to participate in the survey, noting that wider public input will help design routes that better serve everyday travel needs.
