Chennai, May 12:

Southern Railway has significantly strengthened its renewable energy initiatives by adding 140 kilowatt-peak (kwp) solar power capacity across key railway stations and facilities in Chennai Division during 2025–26.
The newly installed solar power systems have been commissioned at St Thomas Mount railway station, Guindy railway station, and railway training facilities in Avadi. This latest expansion is expected to generate nearly 2.04 lakh units of electricity annually, leading to estimated savings of around ₹19.21 lakh every year.
Chennai Division Solar Power Capacity Reaches 2,494.5 kwp
With these additions, the total installed solar power capacity in Chennai Division has risen to 2,494.5 kwp. During 2025–26, the division generated approximately 23.15 lakh units of solar energy, resulting in savings of nearly ₹1.43 crore in electricity costs.
The solar infrastructure is widely distributed across railway stations, office buildings, maintenance sheds, platform shelters, and training centres, reflecting a comprehensive approach to clean energy adoption.
Railway Stations Using Solar Energy in Chennai Division
Solar power systems have been installed at several major railway locations, including Chennai Central New Concourse Hall, Moore Market Complex, Tambaram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Katpadi, Arakkonam, Royapuram, Jolarpettai, and Tiruvallur.
In addition to solar installations, the division is also leveraging hybrid renewable energy systems that combine windmills and solar power units to enhance efficiency and sustainability.
Southern Railway Sets Renewable Energy Target for 2026–27
Looking ahead, Southern Railway has announced plans to further expand its green energy footprint by adding another 2,600 kwp of solar power capacity during 2026–27.
This initiative aligns with Indian Railways’ broader vision of increasing clean energy usage, reducing electricity expenditure, and promoting environmentally sustainable railway operations across the country.
