Chennai, June 8:
The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has announced the successful completion of the final U-girder casting for Corridor 5 under its ambitious Phase II Metro Rail Project, marking a major milestone in Chennai’s expanding urban transit infrastructure.
The last U-girder, measuring 19.5 metres in length, was cast for the Adambakkam Metro Station stretch in coordination with project consultant AECOM and contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T). U-girders are large U-shaped concrete structures that form the backbone of elevated metro tracks. With this achievement, CMRL has completed the casting of all 824 U-girders planned for Corridor 5, setting a new benchmark in construction progress.
The precast yard dedicated to Corridor 5, spread across more than 43 acres, has been a key component in this achievement. It has served as one of the busiest production hubs for Phase II, manufacturing large-scale precast structures required for the 13.1-kilometre elevated corridor and its stations.
Corridor 5 is part of Chennai Metro’s broader Phase II expansion, aimed at enhancing connectivity and easing traffic congestion across the city. The completion of U-girder production is expected to accelerate further construction activities, bringing the project closer to operational readiness.
