Chennai, June 29:
The Avadi Corporation has officially renamed a public park in Paruthipattu in honour of Ashoka Chakra awardee Major Mukund Varadarajan, who was martyred during an anti-terror operation in Shopian, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 25, 2014.
The park, spread across 2.65 acres of Open Space Reservation (OSR) land near Kendriya Vihar-II Apartments, also houses a library and a study centre. The proposal to rename the park was initiated by local residents and received approval from the Avadi Corporation Council on May 25.
Residents have welcomed the decision, calling it a fitting tribute to the brave soldier who hailed from the locality and made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
In a similar gesture earlier, the Tamil Nadu government had renamed the 16-km Tambaram–Velachery Road as Major Mukund Varadarajan Salai to honour his memory.
