Bridging BRICS divide

As India prepares to host the BRICS Summit in New Delhi next month, its biggest diplomatic challenge may not be drafting another declaration but building consensus among partners sharply divided by the conflict in West Asia. The differences between Iran and the United Arab Emirates had already prevented BRICS foreign ministers from issuing a joint statement in May. India’s ongoing consultations therefore represent an important test of its ability to transform BRICS from a platform of competing interests into a forum capable of speaking with purpose during a global crisis.

New Delhi’s emphasis on territorial integrity, protection of civilians, uninterrupted maritime commerce and dialogue offers a pragmatic middle ground. The disruption of energy supplies and threats to maritime routes have demonstrated that the West Asia conflict is no longer a regional concern alone. For India, and indeed for the wider Global South, instability in the region carries direct consequences for energy security, trade, inflation and economic growth. A BRICS consensus on diplomacy and de-escalation, even if carefully worded, would therefore carry considerable significance.

India’s effort is also an opportunity to reaffirm the value of patient diplomacy in an increasingly polarised world. Consensus need not mean that every member abandons its national position; it means finding enough common ground to defend peace, civilian lives and the stability of global commerce. If India can help bridge the divide ahead of the September 12-13 summit, its chairship will have achieved something more enduring than a successful meeting — it will have demonstrated that dialogue remains possible even when the world appears most divided.
