Chennai, Sept 1:
The Greater Chennai Corporation removed around 25.2 tonnes of old sofas, mattresses, wooden furniture, clothes and other bulky household waste directly from residents’ homes on Saturday as part of its special solid waste collection initiative.
The Corporation said the collection was carried out on August 29 based on requests received from residents. A total of 74 households made use of the service, with 35 vehicles deployed for collection and transportation.
The door-to-door bulky waste collection programme has been operating since October last year. It is intended to provide residents with a convenient means of disposing of large household items that cannot be handled through the regular garbage collection system.
The Corporation’s workers visit registered households every Saturday to collect unwanted items, including old sofas, mattresses, wooden furniture and clothes.
The waste collected during the latest operation was transported to the incineration facility at Kodungaiyur for scientific disposal.
Officials have urged residents not to dump bulky household articles on roadsides, vacant plots or other public spaces. Such dumping can create sanitation problems and obstruct roads and stormwater drains.
Residents wishing to use the service have to register in advance.
Requests can be made through the Namma Chennai mobile application, by calling the Corporation’s helpline 1913, or by sending details through the dedicated WhatsApp number 94450 61913.
After registration, Corporation personnel visit the address on the designated Saturday and collect the specified material.
The civic body has appealed to residents to make greater use of the service, particularly when disposing of old furniture and mattresses, so that bulky waste can be handled and disposed of through an organised system.
