The Pakistan Super League (PSL) could be moved to a January-February window from next year in an effort to avoid a direct clash with the Indian Premier League (IPL), after media rights holders raised concerns over declining advertising and sponsorship revenues.
The proposal was discussed at a PSL Governing Council meeting in London on September 1. Media rights holder Walee Technologies is understood to have suggested that the eight-team tournament be staged in January and February rather than during the April-May period.
The PSL has traditionally been held in the February-March window. However, international cricket commitments and major ICC events forced the tournament to move to April-May in recent seasons, bringing it into direct competition with the IPL.
The clash has emerged as a significant commercial challenge for the Pakistan league. With the IPL commanding a huge television, digital and sponsorship audience in the Indian subcontinent, media and franchise stakeholders have expressed concern that the PSL struggles to attract comparable attention when the two competitions run simultaneously.
According to reports discussed at the governing council meeting, the media rights holders said the April-May window was not favourable for advertising and sponsorship. Franchise owners have also expressed concern over declining interest in the league amid Pakistan’s inconsistent performances across formats.
The PSL currently has eight franchises after its expansion from six teams this year. Under the existing agreement, the franchises collectively receive 95 per cent of the broadcast revenue from the central revenue pool, making the commercial performance of the tournament particularly important to the teams.
A January-February schedule could also allow the tournament to make use of Pakistan’s relatively clear international cricket calendar from mid-November through March.
There is also a proposal to begin the tournament in Karachi, where winter conditions are comparatively moderate, before moving to Punjab and Peshawar as temperatures improve.
The governing council also discussed additional ways to strengthen the PSL’s commercial appeal, including entering the esports market and organising a possible mid-year tournament under the existing rights agreement.
Any change to the main tournament window would require careful coordination with Pakistan’s international cricket calendar and other global competitions. However, the discussions underline the growing commercial pressure on the PSL to find a space where it can attract viewers, sponsors and advertisers without being overshadowed by the IPL.
