DMK’s Regional Gambit

The DMK’s latest outreach to regional leaders suggests that the party is beginning to look beyond the familiar BJP-versus-Congress framework. Kanimozhi’s meetings with Uddhav Thackeray, Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule, followed by plans to meet leaders such as Bhagwant Mann and Akhilesh Yadav, are significant not merely as consultations on delimitation but as an attempt to test the possibility of a stronger regional voice in national politics.

The message appears clear: regional parties do not want their political relevance reduced to being junior partners in a national alliance dominated by either of the two major formations.
For the DMK, however, this is a delicate balancing act. Its traditional alliance with the Congress has delivered electoral dividends, while several of the regional leaders being approached have their own differences with the Congress. The proposed regional platform could therefore give the DMK greater bargaining power, particularly on issues such as delimitation that directly affect the political weight of southern states. But building a coalition of regional parties is easier said than done. These parties may share concerns over federalism and representation, yet they compete fiercely in their own States and have divergent political interests.
The larger question is whether this is the beginning of a genuine third force or simply political positioning ahead of the next electoral battles. The DMK cannot afford to alienate the Congress while simultaneously attempting to build a platform with parties that have serious differences with it. At the same time, the emergence of a new political force in Tamil Nadu has clearly complicated old alliance equations, making flexibility essential. The DMK’s regional outreach is therefore less about abandoning the INDIA bloc overnight and more about ensuring that it has alternatives when the political arithmetic changes. In coalition politics, keeping every door open may itself be the strategy.
