Chennai, Nov 4: Former Chief Minister and DMK president M.K. Stalin on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the ruling TVK administration over massive discrepancies in power procurement, questioning why the state government has been buying electricity at exorbitant rates ranging between Rs 35 and Rs 41.50 per unit when neighboring Kerala was able to secure supply for around Rs 8 per unit.
Taking to his official social media handle on X, the former Chief Minister cited recent developments in Kerala as a crucial lesson for Tamil Nadu. He pointed out that while the Kerala government faced severe controversy for procuring power at Rs 12.50 to Rs 14.50 per unitāand the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) Chairman was removed from office for ignoring a private firm’s offer to supply 500 MW daily at Rs 8.645 per unitāthe TVK government’s Electricity Minister has been openly justifying purchases at Rs 35, Rs 37, and up to Rs 41.50 per unit.
“If power is available to Kerala at Rs 8.645, Rs 12.50, and Rs 14.50, why was it impossible for the TVK government to secure similar rates? There must be a thorough investigation into the scale of this massive corruption and everyone involved in it,” Stalin stated. He further emphasized that because the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) falls under the portfolio of the Electricity Minister himself, an internal departmental inquiry will fail to reveal the truth, demanding the constitution of an independent and transparent commission to probe the power purchases.
