Chennai: Sankar Muthusamy of Chennai bagged the first ever medal for Tamilnadu at Asian Championship in any category as he finished third in the Asian Junior Championship in Boys Singles U-15.
The tournament was held in Mandalay between 3 and 7 October. He had earlier upset the top seed Prince Dahal of Nepal 21-15,14-21,21-19 in the pre quarters and seventh seed Mohamad Razif of Malaysia 21-16,21-11 in the quarter finals.
However Sankar’s run ended as he lost to Korean Kim Byung Jae 15-21,19-21 In the semi final.
Following his three U15 National Titles Sankar had made a mark at International level by winning a Junior Grand Prix medal (bronze) at Jakarta in March and now the more prestigious Asian medal. He is training at Velammal New gen – Fireball Badminton Academy.
