The Lok Sabha election in Vellore constituency was cancelled by the President Ram Nath Kovind yesterday.
On 30 March, Income-Tax raids were carried out in the Vellore residence of DMK candidate and party treasurer Durai Murugan’s son, Kathir Anand, and Rs 10 lakh excess amount was seized. On 1 and 2 April, more raids unearthed Rs 11.48 crore – neatly packed in convenient packets – from the house of Durai Murugan’s friend and DMK functionary Poonjolai Srinivasan’s sister.
Subsequently, the police registered cases against Kathir Anand, Srinivasan and his sister’s husband Damodaran under two sections.
Meanwhile, Durai Murugan and DMK president M K Stalin have condemned the I-T raids and claimed that it was an act of vendetta politics by the BJP and the ruling AIADMK government in the State. Durai Murugan had also denied allegations that the money seized belonged to him.
Vellore was scheduled to go to polls with the rest of Tamilnadu on 18 April.
