Chennai: Avadi people have a reason to rejoice. The Avadi special grade Municipality has been upgraded as a Municipal Corporation.
It will be based on the Coimbatore City Municipal Act. It is the 15th town in the State to get the Municipal Corporation status.
The town was notified as a Municipal Corporation considering the increase in population, growth in annual income and the level of the civic services to be provided towards fulfilment of the basic needs of the growing population of Avadi, according to an ordinance released here.
The ordinance also said the present Special Officer of Avadi Municipality would continue in the same post for the Corporation as well till a new officer is appointed.
Avadi, Poonamallee and Tiruverkadu municipalities, besides many town and village panchayats may comprise the Avadi Municipal Corporation. It will have a Mayor, Commissioner, City Health Inspector, Ward Committees, Standing Committees, Chief Engineer and other designated officials.
The Municipal Corporations in the State are Chennai, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Madurai, Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruchi, Tirunelveli, Tirupur, Thoothukudi, Vellore, Hosur and Nagercoil.
Avadi MLA K Pandiarajan had assured the residents during the 2016 Assembly election campaign that AIADMK would ensure Municipal Corporation status for Avadi.
Speaking to the media, the Minister for Tamil Official Language said the new Corporation has 5.2 lakh population and 48 wards. Avadi has all reasons to be made a Municipal Corporation.

As of now, the government has only upgraded Avadi Municipality into a Corporation. The merger of areas adjacent to Avadi may take place in the near future. |
