Edappadi K. Palaniswami (2017–2021)

Edappadi K. Palaniswami became the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in February 2017 following political turmoil after the death of J. Jayalalithaa. Born on May 12, 1954, in Salem district, he emerged from a farming background and gradually rose within the ranks of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam as a grassroots leader. Before becoming Chief Minister, he had served in various organizational and ministerial roles within the party.
Palaniswami assumed office during a period of intense internal conflict within the AIADMK following Jayalalithaa’s passing. Despite the unstable political environment, he managed to consolidate support within the legislative party and successfully formed the government. His leadership during this phase helped stabilize the administration and maintain continuity in governance.
His administration focused significantly on infrastructure development across the state. Major investments were made in highways, road connectivity, irrigation projects, and urban development initiatives. Several water management and agricultural support programmes were also introduced to assist farmers, particularly in regions affected by drought and water scarcity.
The government under his leadership also implemented welfare initiatives aimed at supporting various sections of society. Programmes for farmers, housing schemes for economically weaker sections, and infrastructure improvements in rural areas were among the key areas of focus during his tenure. His administration also emphasized industrial growth and investment promotion to strengthen the state’s economy.
Despite facing internal party challenges and political pressure from opposition parties, Palaniswami successfully completed a full five-year term until 2021, which was seen as a significant achievement given the instability that followed Jayalalithaa’s death. Completing the term helped strengthen his position within the party and enhanced his credibility as an administrator.
In the years following the 2021 election, Palaniswami gradually consolidated control over the AIADMK’s organizational structure. Internal leadership struggles within the party eventually ended with him emerging as the undisputed leader of the organization, effectively becoming the central figure in the party’s future political strategy.
Today, Edappadi K. Palaniswami is widely regarded as the principal leader of the AIADMK and the main challenger to the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam government. With the party now largely unified under his leadership, political observers frequently raise a key question in Tamil Nadu politics: whether Palaniswami can successfully rebuild the AIADMK’s electoral strength and defeat the DMK in future elections.
