Young boy in Chennai bags medals at Athletic Championship


Chennai: Rehan Balakumaran, a class 8 student of SBOA CBSE School in Anna Nagar, in the city, has bagged a gold medal in high jump and bronze medal in long jump at the recently-held Chennai District Junior Athletic Championship.

Talking about his performance, Rehan said he cleared 1.58 metres for the high jump gold and 5.27 metres for the long jump silver medal.

Last year, the high reaching youngster was also selected for the CBSE national clusters held at Chhattisgarh in long jump and finished among the top 20 athletes in the U-14 category.

“But, this year, I will do better,” says Rehan confidently, who has been training rigorously every day to achieve his dream.

Talking about his passion for sports, Rehan said,”Apart from long jump and high jump, I also participate in sprints, relays and other sports in inter-school competitions. I train hard every day. My training starts at 6 am in my school.”

Not only that, Rehan, who is just 13 years old, is also trained in karate and currently holds a black belt.

Rehan is the grandson of educationist Amutha Balakrishnan, who founded the Amutha Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Rehan says that his family encourages him to pursue his sporting interests.
