Chennai: Body-building is a fascination for many and passion for some. But for Suraj Darjee (24), it is his way of life.

Last November he won the Mr Tamilnadu title.

A resident of Dhandeeswaram, Velacheri in the city he speaks to ‘News Today’ about his love for boxing and how his journey in this sport began.

He said,“I am from Darjeeling. I came to Chennai 10 years back. I worked at a hotel to make ends meet. Last year, I joined a fitness club and my coach Bala said that I have the potential to become a body-builder. In the beginning I hesitated because I didn’’t have the money to follow the food habits. So my coach came forward to sponsor me.”

“When I won the title, it surprised me because it was the first time I participated in the competition. There were other contestants who were competing to win for more than five-six years. Without my coach I couldn’’t have won it. He was my backbone,” added Suraj.

Suraj, who takes inspiration from Muhammad Ali, said, “He is one of my greatest idols. His hard work had brought him fame and fortune. He has achieved so much in this sport and I have watched all his matches.”

Speaking about his family, he said,”My parents were very supportive when I told them about my passion. Though they could not support me financially, they tried their best. I am trying to make them proud.”

Suraj’s coach Bala said,”When Suraj first joined the gym, I found that he was very passionate and active in workouts. I am very proud that he won the Mr Tamilnadu title in the first attempt. He has put all his efforts and deserves the credit.”

Suraj is now preparing himself to participate in the Mr India contest. He can be reached at 9940354527.
