Tamil cinema holds pride of place in history. Many filmmakers, music composers and actors have left an indelible mark with their creative contributions.

Sadly, today, a host of remakes are being made in Tamil cinema.

This has set off a debate whether Tamil cinema has lost its creativity.

A section of film buffs says, “We lack good writers. This the reason we get to see lots of remakes and movies inspired by Western films. Gone are the days when there used to be a writer besides a filmmaker. Today, all creative departments are handled by the director himself.”

KAATRIN MOZHI

This Jyothika-starrer is a remake of Bollywood hit ‘Tumhari Sulu’. The actress reprises the role played by Vidya Balan. A woman-centric entertainer, it is directed by Radha Mohan. Viddharth plays the hero. Radha Mohan says that he has made changes in the film to suit the Tamil audience. And don’t forget that the popular Malayalam song ‘Jimikki Kammal….’ finds mention in the movie.

VARMA

After critically-acclaimed ‘Naachiyaar’, national award winning filmmaker Bala is busy with ‘Varma’. It is a remake of Telugu blockbuster ‘Arjun Reddy’. Vikram’s son Dhruv makes his debut as hero with the movie. Megha plays the female lead. Dialogues are by Raju Murugan and music by Radhan. The movie is about a successful young medical surgeon, who sets out on the path of self-destruction when his lady love is forced to marry another man.

60 VAYADHU MAANIRAM

Mega producer Kalaipuli S Thanu is ready with a movie titled ‘60 Vayadhu Maaniram’. It is inspired by Kannada hit ‘Godhi Banna Sadharana Mykattu’. It is directed by Radha Mohan and stars Vikram Prabhu, Prakashraj and Samuthirakani. Says Thanu, “It’s the human element that works when you remake a film. This remake is sure to strike a chord with the audiences as it is about an old father with Alzheimer’s (played by Prakash Raj) who goes missing and his son, played by Vikram Prabhu, goes in search of him.”

PARIS PARIS

‘Paris Paris’ is a comedy-drama directed by Ramesh Aravind and produced by Manu Kumaran, which is a remake of the 2014 Hindi film ‘Queen’ by Vikas Bahl. The film features Kajal Aggarwal in the lead role. Music is by Amit Trivedi and cinematography by Sathya Hegde.

U-TURN

Critically-acclaimed Kannada hit ‘U-Turn’, which featured Shraddha Srinath in the lead role, is being remade in Tamil and Telugu with Samantha Akkineni in the lead. ‘U-Turn’, directed by ‘Lucia’-fame Pawan Kumar, revolves around the mystery behind the death of motorists who die tragic deaths after breaking traffic rules on a particular flyover in Bengaluru.

ATTARINTiKI DAREDI

It was a blockbuster Telugu movie starring Pawan Kalyan. Simbu plays the lead and it would be directed by Sundar C. Lyca Productions has announced that it will be bankrolling the project. The movie is about a business heir, who acts as a driver in his estranged aunt’s house to mend her strained relationship with his grandfather, who expelled her for marrying against his wishes years ago.

RX100

After a huge hit in ‘Maragathananayam’, actor Aadhi takes the easy way out. He will star in the remake of the recent Tollywood hit RX100. He will be reprising the role played by Karthikeya Gummakonda in the Tamil version. “The film is titled ‘RX100′ because the bike has a special sound, very raw. The love story between the lead couple, too, is very raw. When I saw the film, I felt it was more suitable for our Tamil audience. And that’s one of the reasons why I wanted to be a part of this project. We will begin pre-production work soon as the plan is to start shooting from mid-October,” Aadhi said.
