Godown of gutkha scam prime accused sealed near Chennai


Chennai: The CBI officials carried out at a raid in a gutkha godown in Sothupakkam, Red Hills, this morning. According to sources, the search took place at the godown owned by Madhav Rao. He is a prime accused in the gutkha scam which rocked the State in 2017.

The officials sealed the godown and have begun inquiries into the case.

It may be noted that a special team comprising officials from the CBI’s anti-corruption wing in Delhi, have begun interrogating Rao.

The gutkha scam came to light after the alleged involvement of State Health Minister C Vijayabhaskar, DGP T K Rajendran and former city Commissioner S George, for allegedly taking bribes totalling Rs 39.91 crore for allowing sales of gutkha, a banned substance in the State.

The case was later transferred to the CBI by the Madras High Court while disposing of a petition filed by DMK MLA J Anbazhagan.
