Chennai: The sensational case of a Kerala teacher eloping with a class 10 student was solved after the police arrested the teacher here in Choolaimedu.
The teacher, Deroni Thambi (40), is remanded by the Kerala police for kidnap, while the boy has been reunited with his parents. The duo was flown from the city to Kochi yesterday.
The student was produced before a Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and Deroni is expected to be produced before a magistrate soon. She is facing charges of kidnapping a minor, under Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act.
POCSO charges were not pressed against her as the student claimed he was not sexually abused. His parents also refused to subject him to medical tests, reports say.
Deroni taught English at a private school in Alappuzha where she met the boy.
The duo had gone missing since 23 September when Deroni visited the boy at his house and interacted with his parents. Later, she asked him to drop her at the bus stop after which the duo remained untraceable.
On 28 September, one of the mobile phones was switched on to put a new SIM card and the police traced them to a lodge in Padmanabha Nagar, Choolaimedu.
It is said Deroni had sold her anklets for Rs 59,000 and paid an advance of Rs 40,000 for a rented house at Arumbakkam.
She also paid Rs 10,000 which was the bill at the lodge they stayed in for four days.
Deroni is divorced and her son lives with her former husband.
