Chennai: Lakshmi Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association in Porur in teh city have come up with a number of welfare schemes in the locality, such as planting saplings, establishing stone benches and many more.
Mangavu, secretary of this association, said,”We had asked the corporation to put up speed breakers to avoid accidents in our area for a long time, but our request was not heeded. After that, we took up responsibility for it; we raised money by ourselves and laid the speed breakers last month. With this, there is less risk of accidents taking place.”
The association also came up with the idea of setting up benches on the roadside. “We have put up five benches in the area,” says Mangavu.
“Many people, especially the elderly, go for jogging in the mornings and they use the benches here to take rest, to read papers, and so on. There is even a bench outside the ration shop, which is helpful for people who carry heavy loads or those who wait in long queues under the sun,” he added.
Bhuvaneshwari, an LIC agent says,”Sometimes youngsters come and sit here in groups and chat. We have been very strict about this; the benches are only for the elderly and people who are tired after walking a long distance. We do not entertain young pairs to sit here, it will set a bad example to the kids.”
Ulaganathan, a member of the association said,”Currently, we are planning to conduct free health camps in the locality for Gandhi Jayanthi. Already, saplings of native trees have been planted in and around Lakshmi Nagar. Discussions are on for planting more such saplings.”
