Chennai: Union Minister of State for Finance and Shipping, Pon Radhakrishnan, today assured that Tamilnadu will definitely get All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Addressing the press after paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 150th birth anniversary at Kanyakumari, the Minister said, “The reason for the delay was acquisition of land and it has been notified to the Centre by the State authorities.”
“The AIIMS hospital will be established in Thoppur, Madurai, and the State government would very soon complete the formalities,” the Union Minister said.
On a request from former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the Centre had approved the AIIMS proposal in 2015-2016, following which a team was sent to visit the State and decide the location.
Among the shortlisted locations, it was stated that Thoppur was ranked high based on a criterion decided by the Centre. Four-lane connectivity from the national highway, 20MVA power supply, sufficient water connection, handing over of land and shifting of transformer were the key requirements. It is said the construction work would be completed in two years.
Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had stated that AIIMS hospital would be spread over 200 acres, consisting of 750 beds and accommodate 100 MBBS students and 60 nursing students. The project would be set up at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore.
The establishment of an AIIMS hospital would make the quality of medical education better, support new researches and ensures high-end tertiary-level healthcare that will help the poor and middle-class strata of society, the Chief Minister had said.
