Chennai: While the city didn’t experience any major rainfall activity in the last couple of days, rains lashed Central and South Tamilnadu with Tirupuvanam recording 15 cm in the last 24 hours and Manamadurai witnessing 13 cm.
Met department said cyclone Luban has formed over Arabian sea while a new low pressure area forms over Bay of Bengal predicting heavy rainfall over the Ghat regions.
“The deep depression over eastcentral and adjoining southeast Arabian Sea moved west-northwestwards, intensified into a cyclonic storm, Luban, and lay centered today over westcentral and adjoining southwest Arabian Sea about 1,260 km west-northwest of Minicoy (Lakshadweep Islands). It is very likely to intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm during next 24 hours and very likely to move west-northwestwards towards South Oman and Yemen coasts during next five days,” said a Met official.
“Also, under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over south Andaman Sea and neighbourhood, a low pressure area has formed over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Andaman Sea. It is very likely to become well marked during next 12 hours and concentrate into a depression during subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move northwestwards towards Odisha coast during next 72 hours,” he added.
The official, said,”In wake of this, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar districts, Ghat areas of Tirunelveli, Theni, Dindugul and Nilgiris districts Tamilnadu. Chennai will remain predominantly cloudy with occassional spells.”
