Chennai: In a shocking incident, two drunk men attacked a pedestrian for tobacco sustenance and chased him at Poonamalle High Road, leading to the victim subsequently under the wheels of an MTC while he tried to escape.

The incident happened last evening near Sudha hotel when the victim was walking from Chennai Central to Egmore.

The two men auto driver M Devan (30) of Dr Santhosh Nagar, Egmore and mechanic V Kamal alias Madurai Muthu of the same neighbourhood were in an inebriate condition. They intercepted the pedestrian demanded for Hans, a banned tobacco.

When the victim avoided the drunk men and kept walking, they chased and attacked him. In a panicked state, the pedestrian tried to run, when he suddenly slipped from the pavement and fell on the road.

Unfortunately, an MTC bus proceeding towards Koyambedu from Broadway ran over him and dragged him for about 10 metres before coming to halt. While passerby rushed him to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, he was declared brought dead.

The police detained the bus driver Eswaran. A case was registered and the duo, Devan and Kamal was arrested after the CCTV footage retrieved from the spot as evidence.

Police are trying to ascertain the identity of the deceased. He is said to be aged 35 and a North Indian.
