Chennai: Raman Street situated off Dr Nair Road, at T Nagar in the city, has become one of the first streets in the locality, to get renovated with new facilities like colourful pavements, rain water harvesting systems, seating benches and plantation of tree saplings- courtesy the Smart City project.

Adding to this, the residents of the street chipped in by working as a team and organising painting of the walls with various themes at the junction of the street.

Messages like ‘avoid plastic usage’, ‘go for cloth bags’, all painted by residents and children themselves, are now adorning the locality.

Speaking out the efforts done, Jayaraman, a resident here said, “We had a perennial problem of the Southwest corner of our street being misused for public convenience. Even after the Smart City project was executed here, that particular area was continuously misused by a few.”

“Our association sat and discussed in length on the issue and several residents unitedly voiced for painting the area which worked out well and solved the issue once and for all,” he added.

Residents subsequently took up responsibilities jointly and organised cleaning, white-washing and thematic painting, it is learnt.

Dayalini, one such resident who took active participation in the entire activity along with another resident Sarojini Thomas said, “When we decided to take up painting, many came forward to help us.”

“The wall in subject is situated behind a school, the management of which also instantly encouraged us. Engineer Uma Sivakumar, Sakthi sir and wall painting groups helped us in a big way. Children too volunteered spontaneously and showed their painting skills,” she stated.

About the themes taken up, she said, “Now as the entire country is keen on preventing plastic usage, we have also taken up the issue and put out messages with visual presentations.”
