Chennai: Around 77 per cent women in Chennai are apprehensive to screen for breast cancer, according to a study conducted by Future Generali India Life Insurance Company Pvt Ltd (FGILI) in association with Momspresso.

The study held as part of World Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also revealed that among 201 respondents across Chennai, one out of three women felt that they were at risk for breast cancer.

The survey was conducted amongst 2,225 women covering Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Lucknow, Bhopal and Chandigarh.

KNOW THE NUMBERS

Of awareness levels, it has been analysed that almost 85 per cent Indian women are well aware and 51 per cent women claim to know about the incidence of breast cancer.

Seventy five per cent respondents have accepted that they need to consult their doctor for diagnosing breast cancer and it was identified that only 23 per cent women have gone through screening for the tumour.

It has also been studied that 42 per cent women failed to screen due to ignorance.

The survey revealed that two out of three women are unaware of self-examination that can help detect the disease at an early stage.

Sixty three per cent of the respondents had not heard of mammography as a screening test for breast cancer and a whopping 79 per cent did not have the slightest idea about clinical breast examination.

FINANCIAL PREPAREDNESS

The survey said that 53 per cent of the respondents perceived the cost to be less than Rs 2 lakh and it is estimated that the treatment cost may range between Rs 2 lakh and Rs 20 lakh.
