Chennai: It has been one and a half year since the cyclone Vardah hit the city. Several settlements were displaced owing to the calamity, which were fixed over time.
However, the problem of overgrowing bushes in a private vacant land in Pallavaram, in the city suburb has been neglected by the Municipality since Vardah, or even before.
The space measuring three grounds in P V Acharya Street, has been posing problems to residents living nearby since a long time.
“Since a compound wall was built, during the cyclone the rainwater was stagnated and had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. After filing complaints with the Municipality, the authorities pumped out the excess water with machines. However, the problem of bushes does not seem to end, as it is not being monitored by the officials at present,” complained a resident of P V Acharya Street.
It was also learnt that people living around were dumping off the garbage right on the vacant plot. Upon continuous requests by other residents, the Municipality strongly condemned and ordered to dispose in the bins.
Following the order, a compound wall was constructed by the owner but it was said that multiple representations and requests made to the owner were not taken up, to address the grievance.
“Blanket worms, leeches and mosquitoes are a nuisance here,” added the resident.
Now that the monsoon is around the corner, locals want the authorities to issue a notice to the land owner. The Municipal sources, were unavailable for comment.
