Chennai: D Malligai Selvi, headmistress of Mambalam-based Sri Sarada Middle School, in the city, was honoured with a doctorate by World Tamil Classic University recently for her contributions to the Tamil language for several decades.
A press release said, Lok Adalat, Judge, Justice Dr T N Vallinayagam, presented the award in the presence of University director L Muthukumaran, Anna University’s Rathinasamy and Lions’ district president, Mambalam M Murugan.
Sharing the news with this paper, Malligai Selvi said, ‘I have loved Tamil right from my childhood and am fond of reading Mahakavi Bharatiyar’s poems.’
“When I worked first with Saraswathi School at Saidapet, I used to read poems of the poet every day during my train journey from Avadi where we resided.”
About imparting Tamil to students, she said, “Our school used to conduct various competitions on the language and I personally encouraged students to read poems and gave them books too.”
Mallikai Selvi, a post graduate in Tamil and in the profession of teaching for over 30 years, has worked for 17 years with Saraswathi School before joining Sarada Middle School as headmistress, sources said.
