Vairamuthu

Chennai: Breaking his silence almost 20 days after veteran lyricist Vairamuthu was caught in the swirl of sexual harrassment allegations made by singer Chinmayi in the ‘#MeToo’ campaign, his son Kabilan Vairamuthu, who is also a lyricist, has issued a statement defending his father.

Kabilan, on his Twitter handle, posted his explanation statement under the name ‘Unmai Vellattum’ (Let truth triumph).

He pointed to the motives and hidden agenda behind the #MeToo movement. “I could see a few saying that there are motives behind the allegations against him. Some argue that there are no such motives. Whatever it may be, it should be legally sustainable. There are also claims that this movement is driven by a hidden political agenda, let the people not be distracted because of this from the issues that are far more bigger and serious,” he said.

The young lyricist also recalled how Vairamuthu, who was from a very small hamlet in Tamilnadu, chiselled himself inch-by-inch to one of the Tamil-identities images that he possesses now.

He said, “People know him as Tamil identity. But he also was a symbol of self-confidence. People of this age do not know the Vairamuthu, who was struggling for a proper day to day life, who was living in a cramped house in Triplicane that does not even have a fan, do not know the scenes where he walked to so many places to get a loan of Rs 150 to pay his college fee.”
