Chennai: Though slightly delayed, the northeast monsoon finally arrived with a bang, lashing the delta region even at a time when there wasn’t any major weather development over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the Met Department, this is just the beginning as heavy rainfall that has been forecast in the next 24 hours.

So, Chennaiites can now get ready for what can be termed as their favorite rainy season.

An official, said, “The northeast monsoon has commenced over entire Tamilnadu in the last 24 hours. As of now, a trough of low at mean sea level lies over southwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Sri Lanka from which another trough is running to south-interior Karnataka across interior Tamilnadu. Additionally, there are four more cyclonic circulations in and around the State. In the wake of these conditions, heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamilnadu and Puducherry in the next 24 hours.”

“In the last 24 hours, Vedaranyam recorded a maximum rainfall of 15 cm, followed by Nagapattinam, which recorded 14 cm. Thiruthuraipoondi recorded 13 cm, Mayiladuthurai, 9 cm, Tiruvarur, 8 cm, Karaikal, Nannilam, Rameswaram, Parangipettai, 7 cm each, and Pamban, Madukkur, 6 cm each,” said the official.

As yesterday’s intense rainfall over the delta regions flooded many localities, a holiday was declared for schools in Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Pudukottai districts by the Collectors.

In Thanjavur, schools were asked to decide whether to function or not based on the extent of rainfall.

As far as Chennai is considered, the official said the city’s sky condition will be generally cloudy with intermittent rain or thundershower, heavy at times, in some areas.
