Chennai: Contrary to expectations, the northeast monsoon rains are yet to show their strength in Tamilnadu especially Chennai which is remaining predominantly dry even in the middle of November now. In fact, we have received more rains from southeast monsoon winds so far.

But things are likely to improve a bit in the coming days as Met department has informed about the formation of a new cyclone over the bay. It may likely to give heavy rainfall over Tamilnadu and Chennai.

An official, said, “The low pressure area over Andaman sea and adjoining Malay Peninsula Friday is now existing central parts of Andaman Sea and neighbourhood. It is very likely to become more marked during the next 24 hours. It is also very likely to move west-northwestwards, concentrate into a depression during subsequent 24 hours and into a cyclonic storm thereafter. In addition, a cyclonic circulation over Comorin area, adjoining Sri Lanka and equatorial Indian Ocean is persisting.”

“In wake of the latter, moderate rainfall lashed South Tamilnadu especially Ghat regions. In the last 24 hours, Coonoor recorded a maximum rainfall of 3 cm followed by Radhapuram, Kuzhithurai and Nagercoil which recorded 2 cm each. Eraniel, Nanguneri, Manimutharu, Colachel, Papanasam, Kanyakumari, Cheranmahadevi, Thuckalay, Ambasamudram, Mylaudy and Attur recorded 1 cm each,” he added.

According to the official, Chennai will remain cloudy. “In the next 24 hours, city’s sky condition is likely to be generally cloudy. Light rain is likely to occur in some areas. In the last 24 hours, the city’s maximum and minimum temperatures were 32.1 and 23 degrees Celsius,” he said.
