Chennai: Justice Vineet Kothari from Karnataka High Court has been transferred to Madras High Court. He was initially proposed to be transferred to Allahabad High Court, through a resolution dated 29 October 2018.

He had then requested to be transferred to the High Courts of Punjab and Haryana, Madras, or Delhi instead.

Acceding to his request, the collegium had then changed its recommendation, to propose his transfer to Madras High Court instead. Vineet has been asked to assume office before 24 November.

Justice Vineet Kothari

It may be noted that acting Chief Justice of Madras High Court Huluvadi G Ramesh has been transferred to Madhya Pradesh High Court. Justice Ramesh was the one who permitted the burial of the mortal remains of former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi at the Marina beach.

Justice Ramesh had requested that he either be allowed to remain in the Madras High Court till his retirement on 20 May, next year, or be appointed as the Chief Justice in any State, including Tamilnadu.

At present, Justice Huluvadi Ramesh is the second in seniority, after Chief Justice Vijaya Kamlesh Tahilramani, among the 62 judges of Madras High Court. He had served as the Acting Chief Justice of the court between 16 February and 4 April, 2017, when the post of Chief Justice fell vacant following Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul’s elevation to the Supreme Court.

He became the Acting Chief Justice once again for a short tenure between 7 August and 11 August, this year, when the then Chief Justice Indira Banerjee got elevated to the Supreme Court and it took some time for Justice Tahilramani to assume charge.

JUSTICE RAMESH’S JOURNEY

Vineet Kothari practiced as a lawyer for 20 years, specialising in tax and other commercial law, constitutional law, arbitration and company law, at the Rajasthan High Court and the Supreme Court. He was appointed as a judge at the Rajasthan High Court, where he served for 11 years, before being transferred to the Karnataka High Court.
