Chennai: The AIADMK headquarters at Lloyds Road, Chennai, now boasts of a new statue of its late general secretary J Jayalalithaa.
The party was trolled mercilessly when it installed a bronze statue of the former chief minister on her 70th birth anniversary on 24 February 2018, as it did not resemble her. Jayalalithaa died on 5 December 2016 and the party wanted to honour her with a statue at the party headquarters.
But after the disastrous first attempt, the work was handed over to sculptor Rajkumar of Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh. The statue that stands 8 feet tall and weighs 800 kg, was brought to Chennai last month.
Yesterday, it was set up on its pedestal.
This morning, party coordinator and Deputy Chief Minister O Paneerselvam and co-coordinator and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami unveiled the glittering statue and showered flowers on it.
The sculptor seems to have achieved what he set out to do.
