One of the important aspects of road safety during night time is good lighting.
Neighbourhood residents are pleased with the effort taken by the Corporation in providing LED lamps at various streets in Velacheri.
Speaking to ‘News Today‘, a Corporation official in charge of the project said the sodium vapour lamps at nine areas were replaced with LED lights.
“We have installed 760 LED lights for the year 2018-2019. We have been tasked with fitting 881 lights, and the remaining 121 lamps will be replaced in the coming weeks,” he informed.
When asked why this sudden change, the official replied, “The main reason for changing the old ones was for saving power.” Areas such as Anna Nagar, Tansi Nagar, Dhandeeswaram, Baby Nagar, Seva Nagar, Andal Nagar, VGP Selva Nagar, Bhuvaneeswari Nagar and Bethel Avenue have benefited from this initiative, he added.
Talking about the initiative, a resident said, “In 2015, there was a plan by Corporation to install LED lights in the locality. But many areas were left out. They had sighted shortage of funds and said were installing the lights only at important places.”
Even though they had to wait for a long time, the residents are happy now. “Earlier, the lights were dull, and after 8.30, the streets wore a deserted look. Mobile snatching incidents have even occurred here. The lights were so dim that we could not even identify if anyone was standing on the road corners and watching us. But now, the nights look as bright as a day and we no longer fear walking through the streets,” beamed Ramya, a resident of Tansi Nagar.
