Kowmari

Chennai: At her house in Padmanabha Nagar, Adyar, Chennai, animal lover Kowmari (41) has four cats for company. She dotes on them like they were little children. She lets us into her balcony, where two puppies are lying on a thick bedsheet that is used as a comfortable cushion.

The rescued puppies were apparently drenched in rain and rescued near a garbage bin.

Even before she could settle down for a chat, she rushes out despite the drizzle and comes in with a kitten. “I heard the cry and followed it,” she says.

Kowmari ‘rescues’ animals only after ensuring they need a home, apart from nurturing them and facilitating adoption.

“I nurse them back to good health. After doing medical checks and vaccinations, I look for potential adopters. We do a proper background check so that they get good homes. We check the person’s address and ID proof too, and get back for regular follow-ups,” she adds.

So far, she has saved nearly 150 puppies and 50 cats. A resident of Adyar for 10 years, Kowmari has her hands full, but not once does she complain.

“There is so much love and contentment,” she smiles.

Has she faced any hurdle in her journey so far?

“Although there are animal lovers here, certain people do cause problems in all aspects. I run two successful businesses. I am mentioning this because many people think we are jobless. I strongly feel that this earth belongs to all. Not just humans,” she points out.
