American water expert William DeOreo with senior government officials at CMWSSB in city recently.

Chennai: To meet the city’s rising demand for water, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board will soon launch a programme that will emphasis source water protection, loss control, and better data on water demands, said American water expert William DeOreo after meeting senior government officials at the CMWSSB here recently.

William DeOreo volunteers on municipal advisory boards in Boulder, Colorado, which address water and land concerns raised by the public. The US Consulate hosted him in Chennai from 26 to 27 November to discuss urban water management with senior government officials, students, business leaders, and civil society representatives, a press release said.

In his meeting with CMWSSB Executive Director T Prabhushankar, DeOreo said he presented US perspectives on water planning and demand forecasting.

During the discussion, the experts and officials addressed the challenges posed by the city’s rising demand for water. DeOreo said that Chennai will be getting new desalination plants soon to meet the ever-increasing water needs.

DeOreo also addressed faculty and students at Anna University’s Centre for Water Resources on making projections for municipal water demands starting from end-use models and demographics.
He participated in a stakeholders’ workshop as a part of the conference ‘Water as Leverage for Resilient Cities Asia’ organised by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Dutch Water Envoy.
