Earlier, it was just the stray dog and cattle menace, now there is an increase in the population of pigs in the locality which has worried the residents in the neighbourhood, as they fear the spreading of diseases.
Residents say the pigs are roaming in large numbers, especially during the late evening hours. Karthik, a resident of Selaiyur says, “The sudden increase in pigs is possibly because of the dumping of the garbage out in the open. As there is door-to-door collection, a few residents throw their trash out in the open which act as the feeding place for the pigs. These animals make it a routine.”
A few residents also allege that a few pig rearers deliberately let loose the animals to graze on streets. Repeated representations to the authorities have gone in vain, they say.
“With so many diseases spreading already, the increase of the pig menace is very scary especially with the rain ahead. We are worried that these pigs could be the carriers of many diseases and infections. It has become highly unsafe for the children to go and play out in the open,” says Murthy, a resident.
