Marina shops: HC sets deadline for corporation

Chennai: The Madras High Court today ordered Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) to submit the draft plan for cleaning Marina beach by 17 December.

Opposing Centre’s new rule for fishermen to inform the government before performing deep sea fishing, Peter Rayan, on behalf of Fishermen Welfare Association, filed a petition in the High Court. When the case came up for hearing today, Justice Vineet Kothari and Justice Anita Sumanth raised questions to Corporation about the maintenance of Marina beach.

Expressing concerns over the setup of fish stalls encroaching Pattinapakkam Road, the Judges asked, ‘Why didn’t Corporation construct a fish market using the funds allocated for it? So, far how many dedicated places have been assigned for fishermen? We need details about the fishermen who have requested for dedicated places.

Finally, setting 17 December as the deadline for submitting the report about cleaning Marina beach, the judged said the Corporation Commissioner should visit the Court daily until the end of the case.
