Chennai: The infamous duo who used Google Maps to break into houses located in the posh areas of Chennai were brought to the city for a crime scene enactment by the police.
According to the police, Sathish Reddy alias Sathya Reddy (34) and Narendra (24) from Hyderabad were arrested recently by the Hyderabad police during a robbery attempt and subsequently produced in court.
During interrogation by the Banjara Hills police, Hyderabad, it was found that the duo has carried out a series of robberies in Chennai in areas such as Teynampet, Mambalam and Nungambakkam.
Following their arrest, a team of Chennai police went to Hyderabad and recovered 120 sovereigns from them. The two culprits were brought to Chennai this morning so that they could enact how they broke into houses.
It is said the duo had stolen valuables from 56 houses in cities across south India so far. Their victims include two residents in the city – Santhanam of Teynampet from whose house they had made away with 27 sovereigns, and Dr Kaushik of Nungambakkam, who lost 100 sovereigns.
Sources said, The youngsters looked very decent and used Google Maps to target locked houses in posh areas of south Indian cities. The duo’s modus operandi was to search for posh areas on Google and find specific locations on Google Maps to reach the spot. They would conduct surveys on such houses for days. They would observe if the house was locked, unoccupied or whether people were living in it. After zeroing in on their target, they would break the locks using iron rods and wear gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints.
They will be taken back to Hyderabad tomorrow.
