Review: Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse – Web of joy

Chennai: The friendly neighbourhood web-slinging hero is back on the screens with a never-before-seen dazzling twist.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is about Miles Morales, a school-going-teen who gets bitten by a spider. In the other side of New York, a big bulky kingpin named Fisk opens up a parallel dimension to retrieve his ‘goal’. The result is catastrophic and many other web-slinging characters from other dimensions fall into this world of Miles. The web-buddies then band together to find a way back home.

Spider-Verse breaks the conventional method of animation with visually gripping effects and a more cartoonic version. The film is a marriage between comic, traditional, hand-drawn animation with a perfect blend of a computer graphics. Whenever the characters of the movie run, jump, scream or when there is an explosion, verbal sound effects like ‘Kaboom’, ‘Pow’, ‘Aargh’, ‘Clackty clak’ plaster the screen with wry humour.

Despite the non-stop action, the movie offers several heart-warming scenes such as when Miles and his father connect emotionally with a closed door in-between or when Stan Lee makes an appearance as a cashier of a shop. ‘It will always fit eventually,’ he says to Miles when he tries out a dress and you can’t help but feel goosebumps scurry across your arms. Moments when Miles tries out his powers, you can literally feel the rush as he zooms over the glittering skyline of New York. Scenes are fudged with excitement, split-screens, long-shot visuals and shake-a-leg jumpy background music.

As the film progresses, it leaves you in wonder by the level of imagination the screenwriters and animators have poured into the movie. Things turn triple-fold faster in the second-half of the film as Miles reaches ‘Now or never’ moment and when the final battle of ‘Good Vs Evil’ leaves the city that never sleeps, upside down.

The voice performances by actors Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Mahershala Ali, Brian Tyree Henry, Luna Lauren Velez, John Mulaney, Nicolas Cage, and Liev Schreiber illuminate the characters with life. This flick just got nominated for Golden Globes. Academy Award members, are you guys reading this?
