An issue concerning a storm water canal at Thiruvenkatapuram, Choolaimedu, is inconveniencing residents of the neighbourhood.
The problem is mainly caused as residents dump garbage into it, say many. According to P Paulraj, who resides at Thiruvenkatapuram Second Street, “People have been doing this for many years. Despite the presence of a dustbin here, it has become a practice for many to throw waste into the canal.”
It may be noted that the waterbody faces issues of blockage, due to the constant dumping of plastic bags and other items.
Same is the case with Thiruvenkatapuram First Street, where a trash can situated right above the canal, is ignored.
Vikraman, a resident, says, “Waste is being disposed either inside the canal or all over the dustbin.”
“It is the members of the public who throw waste and let sewage in the canal and when they face problems, they are the ones who complain that no steps are being taken by civic authorities. Most of the problems can be prevented if they have a sense of responsibility towards the environment,” he said.
